The Two Sides of Satin — How Double-Face Ribbon Is Woven and Why It Costs More

A satin weave is a specific interlacing pattern between warp threads (running lengthwise) and weft threads (running across). In a standard satin weave, each warp thread passes over multiple weft threads before going under one — the standard is four-over-one or seven-over-one. This long float on the surface is what produces the characteristic smooth, lustrous appearance: the eye sees a nearly uninterrupted surface of warp thread rather than the interlaced grid of a plain weave.
